Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):
We are all saddened by the events that continue to unfold in Ferguson. The tragic loss of life and violent clashes with law enforcement, coupled with rioting and looting, have shocked our community and cast a pall shadow over the entire St. Louis region.
During these unsettling and troubling times, I want to assure you that the entire Maplewood Richmond Heights staff is committed to supporting our students and families. I have asked our administrators, teachers, and counselors to be extra visible in our schools and available to help our students in any way they can.
To directly assist all grade levels, we have provided supplementary counseling services to those in need, and we’ve convened discussions in our High School with our Student Resource Officer and others. Our students have also formed a new club, the “Student Group on Race Relations,” which seeks to promote positive social relations across all boundaries of difference. These conversations, along with others, will continue in the days, weeks, and months to come. By cultivating a safe atmosphere and promoting an open dialogue, we will help our students and staff process these difficult events with sensitivity and respect.
Fostering diversity, equity, and social justice is an integral part of the MRH School District’s core values. We seek to overcome the social, cultural, and educational barriers that members of our diverse population may experience through dialogue, advocacy, and community engagement. We must directly confront issues of diversity and social justice in order to alleviate the inequitable practices and outcomes these issues can create.
The MRH community is known throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area, and beyond, as a district that is a shining example of inclusiveness and diversity. Our mission to “inspire and prepare students as leaders, scholars, stewards, and citizens for a diverse and changing world” has never exhibited more importance than it does today. Together, we will work through these challenging times and help build a peaceful future and better society for our students, our community, and our entire region.
Sincerely,
Karen I. Hall
Superintendent
