MRH Elementary will be offering the Banana Splits program for children who have had a “split” in their family due to separation, divorce, deployment, or incarceration. This program consists of six to eight lunch-time group meetings where children of the same grade level are able to receive peer and counselor support around the many issues of family change.  The program is designed to give students an opportunity to talk about the emotions, challenges and struggles related to these changes in the hope of providing comfort and guidance.

The main purposes of Banana Splits are:

  • to provide a safe place to express feelings
  • to normalize feelings through sharing
  • to train children in problem solving and coping skills
  • to increase self esteem through mutual help
  • to support parents and school staff in working with Splits kids
  • to increase communication among children, parents, and school
