A new Missouri law will affect the recently approved 2020-2021 school calendar. We understand that this could be a significant change for our families, and we want to provide some information as we respond to any potential changes to this school calendar. Below are some answers to frequently asked questions on this topic.

What is the legislation?
HB 161 prohibits local school districts from setting an opening date for the school term that is more than 14 calendar days prior to the first Monday in September. The bill was signed into law by Governor Parson over the summer.

Would the legislation affect Maplewood Richmond Heights?
Yes, the legislation will affect our school district’s 2020-2021 school year. The calendar committee presented? the currently posted calendar to the MRH School Board in March 2019, and members approved it in April 2019, all prior to the passage of HB 161. Significant changes will now be required.

How is the MRH calendar developed?
The calendar is developed by the district’s calendar committee, which comprises parents, staff, and administrators. They are charged with creating a calendar that is two years ahead of the current school year to ensure families have planning time for special events and summer vacations. During this extensive process, the committee ensures the school community has the opportunity to provide input. This feedback is reflected in the final proposal sent to the School Board for review.

How will MRH respond to meet the new requirements for the 2020-2021 calendar?
The MRH calendar committee will review the 2020-2021 school calendar to ensure it aligns with new state legislation. The panel will convene in late August or early September. A new proposed calendar will be presented to the MRH Board of Education for approval, per our usual process. As always, we would keep our school community informed of any changes moving forward.
